How Much Sleep Do Toddlers Need To Get?

Babies love their sleep. Sometimes it may not seem like it to parents exhausted by endless feeds, tantrums and nappy changes – but they do.

Also must read: Fun Time with Kinder Joy

In fact, by the age of two most children will have spent more of their lives asleep than awake.

Things start to change around the age our little bundles of joy begin to find their feet and start the transformation from horizontal babies to somewhat vertical toddlers.

But how much sleep does a toddler actually need?

The answer is a lot – usually far far more than parents allow for. Experts believe 13-14 hours is the correct amount, including naptime.

Good sleep is essential in this early stage of their development. The quality and quantity of a child’s sleep impacts their brain development as well as their emotional and behavioural functioning. An increasing body of research also suggests that sleep helps children fight obesity, avoid colds and even succeed in school.

So the importance of sleep a this age cannot be understated but unfortunately it’s at this crucial age that many children begin to actively resist bedtime. The reasons for are manyfold.

Their motor, cognitive and social abilities are all expanding rapidly and with this comes overstimulation. Every day at this age is a sensory adventure and their brains often struggle to keep up with all enormous daily data dumps they receive.

Add to this the development of the child’s capacity for imagination which can lead to the onset of sleep problems such as nightmares. With this comes an understandable increase in a child’s resistance to sleep and to nighttime in general.

The experts over at the Sleep Advisor blog know a thing or two about how to handle nightmares, check out their hints and tips.

Similarly, with their newfound ability to get out of bed on their own, toddlers have a freedom to make choices they simply couldn’t when they were younger – such as getting up and wandering around. Add to this other issues such as separation anxiety and it is no surprise they are reluctant to stay tucked in.

If a child has poor sleep habits, refuses to nap or simply won’t go to bed at his scheduled time, parents often assume the little one doesn’t need that much sleep. Unfortunately that is most likely not the case.

In fact it is more likely such a problem child is actually sleep-deprived. This sounds counterintuitive but it’s true. Drowsy children don’t necessarily slow down the way adults do – overtired, they instead get wound up and display erratic behaviour at bedtime.

But what can be done to help a problem sleeper find the rest they so need. Well funnily enough, the tips sleep experts give to help a toddlers get more sleep are surprisingly similar to those adults should follow also.

They include maintaining a regular daily sleep schedule with a consistent bedtime routine and making sure the sleeping environment is kept the same every night.
Access to screens should also be limited to avoid over stimulating the little one before bed.

Advice we can all learn from.

5 Perfect Christmas Gifts For Babies

Christmas is definitely one of the most wonderful time of the year. Perhaps some say because of it is the time where many received their bonuses and Christmas gifts. However, the true essence of the Holiday is the time spent with the family and how you will make them happy. Giving gifts is one of the best ways to express your love to your family, especially to kids and elderly. Whether a gift has a huge value or priceless, it is still the thoughts that count.

5 Perfect Christmas Gifts For Babies

However, it isn’t that easy to think of what is the best gift you can give to your loved ones especially if you are clueless about what they will appreciate. This usually happens to babies, they may be not able to tell you what they really want but of course, there are unisex gift ideas that are perfect for them. Since Baby Marius is still the baby, we are planning to give him something he will surely love. If you are still undecided on what kind of gift babies under two will appreciate, here are what you need to know.

5 Perfect Christmas Gifts For Babies

Mega Bloks

If you want a baby genius, this toy is a must. It helps stimulate your child’s creativity and also helps in their cognitive development. This toy saves my kids from a lot of tantrums when they are young and it will be a nice gift for Marius too. Aside from that, this is the most durable toy ever! Like for real. The oldest Mega Bloks in our toy room is as old as my first born who is 14 years old.

Kiddie Bikes

He’s really fond of his siblings every time they go biking in our subdivision’s road. He used to ride on his ride on car and stroll along with his Ate. But, he is now eyeing for a real kiddie bike. He is growing so fast, last week he is trying to jump off the stairs.

Puzzle

A wooden puzzle is quite interesting, I find some from the mall. Since babies and toddler are messy most of the times they have water or milk spills, throwing up, and the like. Oh, almost forgot- tantrums like throwing things and reaping things apart. Don’t get a paper or board puzzle, go get a wooden puzzle and you will thank later.

Mini Ball Pit

The last time we go out, the kids have a blast at the ball pit and so do Marius enjoyed the mini ball pit and slide at the Playdium in FunRanch. So, this leads us to put a mini ball pit on the list, maybe a tent full of balls is a good idea.

Doodle Pad

Who doesn’t love doodling? Babies and toddlers really love doodling and exploring with their hands and a bunch of doodling pens and crayons. There are many doodle pads out on the market but what we like most is the doodle table from Hallmark Warehouse Sale. You will be able to save your wall from your toddler’s different strokes of colors and arts.

Do we have the same thinking? If you have something in mind, kindly recommend Christmas gifts for babies. As of now, these are making our list for Marius this coming Christmas. Can’t wait to hear his giggles and thank you kisses while opening his Christmas gifts under his favorite tree.
