Blogging Today: Getting To Know The C, P, I and D

Host: Good morning! Good morning! Today, you will be surprised to learn who our guests are. I am not in the position to be here but Pehpot assured that I can do this well and she will also be here today to give her inputs and ideas. So without further adieu, let’s all welcome Miss Pehpot together with our guests.

Good morning  Miss Pehpot and I will give you the limelight so please introduce to us our guests for today’s episode.

Pehpot: Good morning mommies, daddies and to all our viewers and readers.. Our episode for the day might be a bit familiar with you and most of our guests you’ve met already, in fact some of you might be very familiar with some of them.

Let’s all welcome, Miss P, Mister C, Miss I and Miss D. Please guys tell us something about yourself, we love to hear it from you.

Miss P: Hello everyone! I am Miss P and a lot of women knows me, I can be your best friend but I can also be your worst enemy.

Mister C: They say I am not reliable, what can I say? try at your own risk, I am Mister C and I am oozing with flavors.

Miss I: Good morning mommies! I may be uncomfortable at first but once you get to know me, you’ll never want to live without me.

Miss D: Greetings everyone! I am Miss D and though my reputation is not that good, I think I can make you understand more about me.

Host: Thank you guys for the very intriguing introductions. I bet our readers and viewers are still at lost on your true identity. Just hold on guys and together with Miss Pehpot, we will disect each one of them hahahaha

Pehpot: Right on host! Let’s get this party started. I want to ask you guys, what makes you different from each other?

Miss P: I can say that I am the most flexible, you can find me cheap but of course with that price tag I dont’ promise that I can’t give you head aches. You can also find a better me, a more expensive one and comes with a skin care package.

Pehpot: Oh! I can vouch on the skin care part hahahaha

Mister C: I think I am the most accessible and not to mention I come in different size and flavors too.

Host: I even see you at convenient stores!

Miss I: In terms of side effects, I offer the least but you really need to be extra clean so that our friendship will last.

Miss D: I think my edge with them is that I am very convenient and not to mention the cheapest.

Host: And since you mentioned what makes you different from each other, we would like to know more about you and how you guys function.

Pehpot: I guess it’s about time that you also educate us why we should have you and shed us some light on some effects you have on our body. So let’s first ask Mister C since he is the only thorn among the roses. Mister C, please do tell us what can you do and how well do you rate as a birth control method?

Mister C: If you are still not aware Ladies, the C stands for Condom. I am sure most of you knows me or already heard of me. I am the man in the middle of the action. OK let me rephrase that, I am used during the act itself or else I won’t be effective. So what can I do? I serve as a barrier to reduce the risk of getting pregnant. OK let me make it clear for every one, I CANNOT PREVENT pregnancy, I can only reduce the probability of being pregnant.

Host: So are you telling us that you are not an effective birth control method?

Mister C: Well, I can say I am effective but not 100% (smiles sheepishly).

Pehpot: I bet you are hahahaha
How about you Miss P, please tell us more about you and how effective you can be.

Miss P: As I mentioned earlier, I am the most flexible, that is in terms of the price. You can buy for as low as 100 PhP per pack but I am also available as high as 400+ PhP per pack.

Host: Given the fact, that you are flexible in terms of prices, how does this affect your effectivity as a birth control method?

Miss P: Oh well, let me first explain what I do as most women that used Pills (that’s my full name) does not know how I function. Let’s make this very simple. I worked by injecting some hormones on your body thus preventing you from ovulation. If there is no ovulation, even if you have an intercourse, there will be no egg to fertilized so there will be no pregnancy.

You can buy pills at a very cheap price but this kinds of pills sometimes pose a not so good side effect such as head ache. Pills with a  more expensive price tag are also anti acne thus giving you a smoother skin.

Pehpot: Oh yes, I knew that from experience. I have been using pills and my face is really smooth and acne free.

Host: How about you Miss I, am I right to assume that it stands for IUD? You mentioned before that at first we migth find you uncomfortable, how is that so?

Miss I: Oh well, to those who are not familiar with me, I am Intra Uterine Device or IUD. A form of birth control method where in a foreign body is inserted in your cervix. And that’s why I said I am uncomfortable at first, knowing there’s a foreign object inside you can be very uncomfortable.

Pehpot: Oh yes, that is why even my OB recommended IUD to me, the thought of it makes me cringe. I don’t know but I am still not at peace with the idea.

Host: So how do you work Miss I? And how well you rate as birth control method?

Miss I: Well, I work by affecting how the sperm cells moves thus preventing the meet up of sperm cell and egg cell. Another thing, my presence in the uterus makes its unfit for the embryo.

Host: Oh now I know how you worked Miss I. How about you Miss D?

Miss D: D stands for DMPA or depot medroxyprogesterone acetate, OK let’s stick to the abbreviation, DMPA and let’s make this really really simple. Basically, same as Miss P, I work with hormones, only I have a longer effect. I am injected every 3 months to a woman’s body. I create a condition where in the body feels like it is pregnant, hence there is no menstruation over the 3 months period.

Some people thinks it’s abnormal and some even thought that since they are not having their monthly period, the blood (or some called it “dirty”) stayed on the reproductive system or they say matris. It’s not the case, the thing is, since I condition pregnancy, your body acts as if it is pregnant, no mens at all.

Host: That’s very enlightening Miss D. I must agree I often heard that people thinks DMPA keeps your “dirty” blood inside your body.

Pehpot: And that is the reason why I asked them to guest our show, it is to enlighten our readers on how they function as contraceptives and how effective they are. As much as possible, I also want to shed light on some beliefs regarding the different kinds of contraceptives.

Now, guys, we took some feedback and complains from moms who had used some of you in the past, let’s hear from them and I hope you guys can clear their concerns.

Host: The moms choose to be anonymous so let’s just call them Mom1, Mom2 and so on. Let’s hear from Mom1 on her concern about using pills. Insert VTR

Mom1: I have been using pills for months now, what if I forgot my pill? What should I do? Will I get pregnant?

Miss P: If you forgot to take your pills, take it as soon as you remember then proceed with your usual schedule. You won’t get pregnant as long as you continue taking your pills. Also remember to read the instruction on your pill packaging as it provides very helpful tips on taking it and what to do when you missed one.

Mom2: This is for Miss D, I have been with you for more than a year and though I really like how convinient you are, my husband is complaining already, he says I no longer has the passion, though he is not complaining about my wieght gain, I am concern on that too. Is it really normal?

Miss D: Well, since I conditioned the body to feel pregnant, there is really the tendency to feel less passionate about sex and also to gain weight, but my effect dffers from one body to another, I heard that in some moms, they are losing weight instead of gaining.

Mom3: I am still thinking what birth control method to use and I am considering IUD, but my friends raised a lot of concerns about it. They even told me that during intercourse, the foreign object can be felt with the partner and there is a probability that we get locked into each other because of it. I also want to know why they say that women who uses IUD are prone to infection.

Miss I: I have been hearing that humor for a very long time already and I still can’t help but laugh whenever I hear it. I am placed inside the uterus and I am not really sure about the partner feeling me but I can say that the myth about locking each other is not true. The only side effect I offer is heavy period and menstrual cramps.

And if a woman is not hygienic, I am not for them. As you know, I am a foreign object placed inside you and I came with a string which can be felt in your vagina. If a women is infected, there is a tendency that the infection will go up in your uterus because of the string. But no, women using IUD can be prone or not to infection and this heavily rely on their hygiene and not to me.

Pehpot: My OB actually recommended IUD to me because it is the cheapest and has less side effects, although she said it can very difficult at first. I need to see her constantly for 2 month to check if the IUD is in placed and if my body is reacting good on it. But I am still afraid to try. I have friends who are into IUD and some of them have been with it for years already. MY OB says that an IUD can last up to 5 years without replacement.

Host: Oh grabe! This show episode is very informative! I really learned a lot and I hope our readers learned something from us. I really enjoyed having you guys here and I hope you can return for some more Q&A portions.

Birth Control Methods (in unison): That we can say we’re 100% sure that we can come back.

Pehpot: It was an honor to have you here in our show and once again, thank you so much.

Host: Miss Pehpot, thank you also for being with me on this epidose. And dear readers and audience, see you again on our next epsiode of BLOGGING TODAY!

The Dengue Paranoia

oh let me rephrase that, the Dengue Epidemia.

Dengue has been on the news for the past few weeks. August and September are months where Dengue cases rise. As of date (heard from the news), there are already 40,000 cases of dengue for this year, 10,00 of which coming from Metro Manila and the saddest part, almost 300 cases led to death.

Early this year, we lost a love one because of it. My husband’s nephew. Just like any dengue story, the child got fever and on the third day, he was admitted to the hospital. He got a stronger type of dengue and few days the infection got his brain, a few more days and he’s gone. It was one of the most difficult time in the family. It’s the first time that it happened and from a disease that is curable.

I cannot say what happened during those times but I can say that knowledge can be one of the best armor against this disease.

Dengue is a disease that can lead to death BUT it can be cured. It has 4 strains so a person who experienced it, can experience it again.. and can happen 4times. Don’t be afraid though, as mentioned, Dengue can be cured.. but we need to know how and what to do in order to fight Dengue.

This disease, as we all know are transferred through mosquito bites. There is a type of mosquito that carries the dengue virus. And when a dengue carrier mosquito bites a dengue infected person, and sucks a blood from the person, then bites another person, that’s when the virus is carried. I know we have to very vigilant about dengue but to save us from paranoia, keep in mind that, if there is no dengue case in your area, it is very little that a dengue virus is being carried out by mosquitoes on your area.

But if there is a dengue case in your area, you have to be very cautious and of course be very observant with the condition of your kids.

What are the symptoms of Dengue?

  • consistent fever
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • bleeding of the gums
  • stomach pain and muscle pain

We don’t have to wait for the symptoms, do we? as far as I know or based on reports, there are cases where in when the virus is detected, it is too late to be cured..and I know all of us do not want to hear the term, too late..

So what must we do?

For one, when your child has a fever, make sure that you will only give them doctor recommend medicine, stick with paracetamol such as Biogesic as this is safe for dengue fever. Some meds for fever can actually worsen the case (like Ibufropen or those that targets inflammation).

Water. Water. Water. This will be your cheapest ally. That is why people use Tawa Tawa to treat dengue.

Dengue NS1 or NS1 antigen test (Platelia Dengue NS1 Ag assay) is a test that can detect dengue virus on the first day of fever until 3-5 days. It’s pricey but, we cannot put a price tag on our kid’s safety right? So when you are suspecting dengue, go to your nearest hospital and asked about NS1.

Always remember that this kind of virus targets our immune system so the  best way to fight it is to strengthen our immune system. And during this time where dengue is very rampant, increase your vitamin c intake specially with your kids. Other things that we can do to prevent dengue:

  • Dark colored clothing attracts mosquitoes while light colored tend to blind them. As much as possible, put your kids on white pjs.
  • Clean your place, dark and messy corners are mosquitoes favorite hiding place and they breed lay eggs on water.
  • Use insect repellent, use citronella oils or Mosquito patches.
As a mother, seeing the news with parents losing their child due to dengue breaks my heart. And I want to educate people about dengue, because I know, with proper education, we can battle this disease.

“Wala Ba Kayong TV?”

Year 2004:
“Wala ba kayong TV?”
“meron no, perong walang cable.”

Year 2007:
“wala pa rin kayong TV?”
“meron nga, meron na rin cable, pero.. ”

Year 2009:
“di ba may TV naman kayo?”
“hehehehe LCD pa nga.. ang sarap manood ng..”

And that’s what our family planning is all about. bow.

Would you believe if I tell you that we lived together for 3 years before I got pregnant? And that my pregnancy was a planned one? Of course we were doing it, hey we were doing it even before we had our 2nd monthsary. But we know what we were doing. I never got pregnant during those years. It was only in 2003 that we decided it’s about time. See? we know family planning even before we start a family.. and that’s what we thought.

October 2003 and I was the happiest mommy. I gave birth to my first born child. During my pregnancy, all I can think about is the excitement of being a mother. We never even discussed our child spacing. And when I gave birth, the pain, the trauma and the finances told us not to have another child in the next 3 years. Four years sounds reasonable to me. So it was set, 4 years.. 4 years.. 4 years..

I’m breastfeeding.. so it’s safe. Oh wait! who told us that? OK we assumed that since I am breastfeeding, I will not get pregnant. But hey, remember our TV has no cable? By the time that my first born is celebrating his first birthday, I was already 4 months pregnant with our second child.

Giving birth was not easy. It was the most traumatic and painful thing that ever happened to me and here I am again, like time bomb waiting to explode. I can’t remember how I was able to battle the 9 months wait without feeling nauseated with  the thought of having to go through labor again.. having to go through post partum again.. and having to go through the finances again. I was always nauseated that time but that’s because of morning sickness not the thought of the above mentioned.

But I did! I waited for 9 months and gave birth to another baby boy. And that’s the end of it. I said no more babies (for now). I do not know what birth control method to use, I am clueless and afraid to try anything. When we brought our second child for his BCG at the Branggay Health Center, they told me to use Injectibles (in a not so nice way I tell you), so I did. It was very cheap, only 100 Pesos and it will last for 3 months, then I have to be back again for another shot. It was very convenient but it massacred our sex life, and it introduced me to high blood. After 18 months of using it, I stopped.

My OB Gyne suggested IUD but I was afraid, so I end up with pills. That’s in 2007. Two months and more than 4 missed pills, I stopped and we relied on ryhtm method. By September of 2007, I was pregnant again. And as if history is repeating itself, by the time that our third son is celebrating his first birthday, I was already pregnant with our 4th baby, only I was on my 3rd month then, not 4th.

It’s very amusing how we end up with four kids. We both know when it is safe to do it and not. I know my cycle, I have a regular cycle. Funny that even though we were armed with that knowledge, 3 out 4 of my pregnancies were unplanned. And it is as if we never learned from each of it.. oh well except for the last one. I am not saying I regret having 4 kids, I actually feel I am the luckiest mom in the whole world for having these adorable babies, but It just made me realize that if unplanned pregnancy can happen to people who knows something about reproduction, cycle and birth control, what more to the people who don’t know a thing about it?

What more to those people na wala talagang TV?
