Creating A No Sew Tutu For A Baby Girl

When she asked for a yellow party, she mentioned a yellow costume…and one thing comes to my mind, a YELLOW TUTU it should be! Now, comes finding the best supplier.. but with one week notice, I know I wouldn’t find a supplier. Thank goodness for Google and Youtube, I found a great  (not so great because it did not indicate how many yards I need) tutorial on how to make a non-sew tutu.

Where to buy tutu material and what it is called?
I went to Divisoria (building between Tabora and Ylaya street) for the material, when I asked what can be used for Tutu, I was given two kinds of Tule, one is soft and the other one is stiff. I think the stiffer one is the used for ballet tutus.. the softer one (the softer) is what I need. The softer tutu is at 65 PhP per yard (60 width).

How many yards to make a Tutu?
For Sati’s Tutu, I used 2 yards of White tule and 2 yards of yellow, so that’s 4 yards in total. Sati’s tutu is double layered (see photo above).. so if you only need a single layered tutu, you will only need 2 yards for a 3 year old baby (or more if your 3 year old is big).

  • 1-3 years old: 4 yards (double layer) or 2 yards (single layer)
  • 4 years old: 6 yards for double layer tutu, 3 yards for single layer
  • 6 years old: 8 yards for double and 4 yards for single
  • adult: 20-24 yards for double and 10-12 yards for single

No-sew Tutu
If you have seen the tutorial, making the tutu is quite easy.. what makes it hard is how to cut the tulle. I am not sure if there’s a supplier here that offers tulle in 6 inches width.. if you know one then you are lucky! If not, here’s how I did mine:

The tulle I bought is 60 inches width and I need 20 inches for each strip (each strip for a 3 year old tulle should be 6 inches by 20 inches at least.. you can do 15 inches or 20 inches if you want it longer). Each yard gave me 18 strips.

I lay flat the yellow tulle then placed the white tulle on top, then fold it to make it appear that the white tulle is “inside” the yellow tulle.. then I tied the overlapping tulles on my garter until every inch of garter is done. I used a simple garter as the waistband (but you can also use a crochet headband) and used a big can milk as my mannequin. For the ribbon, I just tie it in between the tulle.

How much did I spend for the Tutu?

Here’s a breakdown:

  • 4 yards of  tulle P65 x 4 = P260
  • 2 yards of purple ribbon (see photo above) P8 x 2= P16
  • 1 yard of plain garter P4
  • measuring tape P20

TOTAL COST of TUTU: P300 (fare not included)

How many hours did I spend making a no-sew tutu?
I made it in an hour (I think) and that includes cutting and tying.. and fitting.

I think, this will be a new hobby.. I saw this black dress tutu (photo from SM Kids Fashion FB page) and I can’t stop thinking about it! I have a few friends with baby girls.. I think I can make some for them too! It was easier than I thought it was and not even pricey!

Scout Investiture and United Nations Parade

and the stage mom award, goes to…

Me!

Oh gosh! me?!? I didn’t expect this.. and all I did last week was be there with my son.. er or maybe not! hahaha

Last Wednesday was his scout Investiture.. and of course, I have to be there, for photo ops ano pa and for the alampay ceremony..the test was.. attend the said ceremony with two toddlers in hand (OK I almost lost my patience back there haha)

After the ceremony, I had to rush to Quiapo to look for United Nations costume.. lagare kung lagare! My son is Mr Japan, so I had to look for Japan costumes. One of the yaya said, I can buy cheaper United Nations costume at Quiapo.. so there.. good thing it was still early, no traffic yet. I got his Japan costume for only 500 PhP (or 450 ata argh I can’t remember!) OK I’ll make another post for that.. kase while I was there, the mommy blogger in me took place and I interviewd the staff on the prices of United Nations costumes they offer 🙂 After Quiapo, I went straight to Divisoria for the upcoming parties (first born’s and only girl’s birthdays). And I found another cheap store that sells party favors (OK anther post on that one.. hala ang dami ko ng utang na post! waaah)

Thursday.. and it was not just United Nations Parade.. their Halloween Party comes after.. as well as first born’s “school party”

My Emperor! buti may long wig ako that serves as his hair dress (ang mahalia jacksn ng hair dress sa Quiapo!).

United Nations 2012 Mr and Ms Japan! After the short parade, I have to rush back home to cook spaghetti for the party.. and my boy went from Emperor to a Japanese Vampire! hahaha

And because Kuya loves his little brother so much.. he turned Chico into a vampire too! hahaha

at ang aking kangaragan ay hndi natapos jan.. may Halloween Party/Birthday Party pa sa bahay noong Saturday!
bow.

School Ready Mommy!

not that I am going to school anytime soon.. but again this post will serve as a reminder to me, like my post on educational material stuff.

notebooks.. pencils.. crayons..

We tend to buy all those stuff weeks before the school year starts, right? I am sure some moms even bought terno bag and notebooks and pencils.. oh I guess when my 3rd son starts going to school.. it will be cars 2 everywhere! and Hello Kitty everywhere for the little girl.

And with the terno bag and notebooks and pencils and even lunch box, you think you’re all set for the coming school year? I thought I was! I though that was all I need.. and mid school year, I realized ekk! I did not even bought half of what my school boys need! So this blog post will serve as my check list.. you can use this too!

Let’s start with clothes.. you know, school years happens with Nutrition Month, Linggo ng Wika, United Nations, Halloween Party, English Month and so on.. It’s hard for a mom like me to look for costumes for the said occasions.. so next year, as I troop down to the bargain capital of the country, I will include this on my must buy school items:

  • Barong Tagalog and black pants for my 2 boys (or 3 as my 3rd son will be a pre schooler next year) > Ang esensya ng barong tagalog at black pants.. bow.
  • Filipino Costume, aside from Barong Tagalog
  • Costume for Halloween or yards of tela in case my creativity strikes in

Now the props!

  • sombrero for the nutrition month, complete with plastic fruits on top
  • posters and picture of national heroes/ pambansang sagisag
  • flags for United Nation
  • mask for Halloween party

For the projects:

  • family printed photos
  • child’s solo picture, printed (in different sizes, 1×1, 2×2 etc)
  • plastic envelope, brown envelop, folders
  • cartolina (different colors but more white) / manila paper / card board
  • maps
  • magazines (now I should attend more events on summer and will require PRs to include magazines on the loot bag LOL)
  • more art materials.. as in more na more

Yan lang muna but I’m sure, I’ll add more to this.. kailangan pati so mommy matuto at maging school ready!
