Is There a Fitness Program Right for Me?

No matter what a person’s age or physical condition, there are workout programs that will suit their needs. Even the people who say they hate exercising can find a workout program that is actually fun.

Pilates – originally created for strengthening a dancer’s body, Pilates is now available for everyone. It is a core-strengthening and muscle conditioning workout that can be done on the floor or on a Pilates reformer, which is a platform with pulleys that stretch the body. Pilates is an exercise that is gentle on the knees and back, and is often recommended by physicians for older people or for those who need to stretch their muscles effectively.

Yoga – another workout that lengthens and stretches muscles, yoga focuses on holding poses that brings balance and calmness to the body and mind. While everyone can do yoga, it also is recommended for people with physical limitations such as arthritis or back problems. Yoga is based on mental and physical centering and focus. It is usually done on a yoga mat in a room that is peaceful and calming. There are forms of yoga conditioningclasses that are more challenging for the experienced practitioner.

Zumba – for people who say they hate to exercise, a zumba class is a perfect fit. Zumba combines Latin dance moves with hip-hop and classical dancing for a really fun, invigorating workout. The music ranges from jazz to Latin, rap or rock and instructors lead the class in challenging dance moves similar to those on professional music videos. It is fun for all ages, and gets the whole body moving.

P90-X –for the person who wants to get in good physical shape, but does not want to join a gym, the P90-X system is perfect. It is an extremely challenging series of workouts that will condition the entire body. The workout requires dedication as it is not easy, but the results are amazing. The system comes with a series of DVDs that instruct the person on how to safely perform the workout routines, but the person with medical issues should check with their physician before embarking on the program.

Wii-Fit –the person who prefers to workout at home and has a Wii can find great workout routines with Wii-Fit. The benefit of Wii-Fit is that the person works out on the Wii platform and the system monitors the person’s moves and will provide instruction on how to work out safely and effectively. People just starting on a physical conditioning program might find this a lot less intimidating than going to a gym. The Wii also has dance routine workouts that are conditioning the body muscles but doing it in a fun way.

Getting the body moving can improve a person’s overall health and mental well-being.
