You may think that it’s too early to start baby proofing your home if your baby is still an infant but you will be surprised that soon enough, they will start crawling. Here are five tips to babyproofing your home.
1. Secure your appliances and furniture.
It would be dangerous to your child if an appliance or furniture accidentally falls on them. When your child starts crawling and grabbing things, it may be hard for you to keep your eyes away even for a second. In order to secure your appliances and furniture, you can tie them or put them in designated places that your child won’t be able to grab. You can use furniture straps on your dressers, TV, and bookshelves. Place a bumper on any sharp edges of your furniture. lastly, avoid putting your TV on top of a dresser as it can potentially fall if your child grabs or climbs the dresser.
2. Try to add a baby gate to your stairs.
Safety is number one priority when you have a baby. An important part of baby-proofing your house is to add a baby gate to your stairs. As a parent, we may have times when we have to look away for a second to do something important. But looking away for a second can be very challenging especially if your room is upstairs. Your child could immediately crawl towards the stairs! In order to avoid worrying about this, try to install a baby gate to section off spaces that can get your babies going to dangerous places.
3. Put outlet covers.
Exposed electrical outlets are very dangerous especially for babies who are curious to grab and touch anything they see. Put an outlet cover on any exposed electrical outlets to prevent shocks. Make sure that your covers are considered child proof since some small outlet covers are potential choking hazards. Lastly, for an added protection, hide your outlets by putting a large furniture in front of it.
4. Install reliable locks on your cabinets.
Children can easily have access to potentially hazardous chemicals like house cleaning products or detergents, especially in the kitchen if your cabinets are unlocked. Make sure to install quality latches that can lock when you are closing all your cabinets. Do this especially in the lower part of your cupboard where your baby can easily have access. As an added protection, keep poisonous and hazardous items tucked away from small curious hands.
5. Install necessary alarms inside your home.
Invest in smoke detectors and fire alarms and make sure to install it to each room in order to safeguard your whole family from danger.
