Why Do Filipinos Cook Ginisang Monggo Every Friday

It’s as if I was programmed to cook Ginisang Monggo every Friday. I just can’t think of any dish to prepare on the said day. Not only that, it needs to be paired with paksiw na isda or else..

Is it just me? I heard it’s a common thing. In fact, the carinderia where my husband eats also serves ginisang monggo every Friday. It’s a mystery! Why do Filipinos cook ginisang monggo every Friday?

Before I share with you my Ginisang Monggo recipe, let’s try to deduct the reason why..

–>Some readings suggest that the tradition of cooking ginisang monggo every Friday is due to the Lenten Season. You have to sacrifice  something and eating meat is one, that’s why, instead of cooking meat on Friday, Filipinos prepare ginisang monggo.

BUT WHY MONGGO? There are so many vegetables out there!

–>Another reading suggest that the time of grocery may be the answer. Filipinos, back in the old days, do their market trips on weekends, specially Sunday. If you have noticed it, most palengke have their “Palengke Day” every Sunday. And since they do their shopping on Sundays, by Friday, the only produce that is not spoiled is dried monggo.

Putting them together makes sense! Pero paano naman ang hindi katoliko?!?

Maybe, another reason is, when Friday comes, there is little money left from the pay check. Monggo’s really cheap so that’s the best option when you’re running low in cash.

Here’s another theory from Pinoy Exchange:

–>Spanish priests taught the Filipinos to eat monggo every Friday so they wouldn’t buy meat. Meat can be pricey during that times (?) and if they don’t buy meat, they have more money to give to the church.

PERO BAKIT MONGGO?

Let’s settle with the answer: it’s really cheap. If you have 50 pesos, you can cook ginisang monggo and feed 10 people.

Ginisang Monggo Recipe

Moving on, here’s my simple Ginisang Monggo Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 15 PhP pack monggo
  • 3-5 pcs shrimp
  • 2 medium size tomatoes
  • Garlic 2-3 cloves, minced
  • 1 medium size onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon patis
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ampalaya leaves or malungay leaves

How to cook:

  1. Precooked the monggo, 4 cups water, boil for about 20 minutes or until the monggo is soft
  2. Saute garlic, onion and tomato.
  3. Add patis and then shrimp.
  4. Add monggo and mix and let it stand for about 5 minutes (just make sure the fire is set to low)
  5. Add 2 cups of water and let it boils then add the leaves.
  6. Cook for another 3 minutes and serve Paksiw na Isda and steaming rice.

Paksiw na Isda Sa Kamias Recipe

Some people call this pinangat, some paksiw. Some uses vinegar, some tomatoes, some green mangoes (my fave!) and some uses kamyas. That’s what I used in my paksiw earlier, hence the title of the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 kilo fish (my fave is salay ginto but it’s too small, try alumahan or matangbaka)
  • 8-10 pcs kamyas
  • 1/4 cup sliced luya
  • 1 big onion
  • 2 siling green
  • 1 teaspoon salt

How to cook paksiw na isda sa kamias:

  1. Slightly crush the kamias.
  2. Put half the kamias, onion, luya on a casserole
  3. Insert half kamias and some luya on the fish then put it on the caserole.
  4. Put the remaining ingredients on top of the fish
  5. Put on high fire for about 5 minutes then add 1/2 cup of water.
  6. Let it boil for 3 minutes and serve with Ginisang Monggo and rice!

You may noticed that my photo included fried pork. It’s supposed to be Crispy Liempo or Lechong Kawali but I left it on the stove for long..hence the dark color. Once I perfected my Lechon Kawali, I will share with you my recipe. For now, enjoy the monggo!

Time To Bring In The Avengers..

I should have waited for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D episode this week before watching Age Of Ultron. It would have been different. This week’s episode is like a prequel to Age of Ultron!

Dr List mentioning the twins who survived the experiments on alien enhancements. Alien enhancements using Loki’s staff! But we already know that from Captain America: Winter Soldier (mid credits scene). And then there’s Agent Phil saying it’s time to bring the Avengers and Raina having a premonition of what’s about to happen!

Can I scream? Uh well, I just did.

So this is the reason why they were not in the movie.. they were there before the movie happened. I still wish to see their reaction when they learned that Agent Phil is alive. I hope they’d learned it in a dramatic way and not as casual as when Agent Phil revealed to Gonzales (the otherS.H.I.E.L.D) that Nick Fury is alive.

And in terms of being casual, it will never be the case with Agent Ward. The team really hates Agent Ward and I think he realized that when Jemma tried to kill him. But this episode showed his soft side.. there’s hope for Agent Ward.

There’s still 2 episodes to go and I can’t wait for this season to end.

4 Things You Need To Know About Debt Consolidation

Should you get a personal loan to consolidate your loan? Wait! What is debt consolidation? Here’s a guest post that teaches us the 4 things we need to know about Debt Consolidation:

Debt is a scary thing, and racking up debt can send people off the hinge just to be able to deal with it. If you have a debt, your initial recourse may be to tighten your belt, cut off unnecessary expenses, and work on your debt slowly until you can finally pay it off. However, there is another option if collection agencies have been bugging you left and right: debt consolidation. What is debt consolidation and should you apply for a personal loan to settle your debts once and for all.

What is debt consolidation?
In a nutshell, debt consolidation is applying for a personal loan to pay off all your debts by combining them in a single one for easier settlement. This means that the customer who has several debts can apply for a larger loan, which amounts to approximately the sum of all the debts combined. With debt consolidation, people can pay off their debts with a single payment instead of facing multiple fronts.

Debt consolidation is just one of the many nifty ways people can use personal loans. However, you may need to make some consideration before you scurry applying for a personal loan. To help you in considering to whether or not apply for personal loan, here are a few things you need to consider.

When is debt consolidation good for you?
It’s hard to step up to the financial ladder when you’re currently swimming in debt, and your options are merely limited to paying them all at the same time or consolidate them and just pay one massive debt. With this matter at hand, debt consolidation is good for you because of the following reasons:

  • Convenience of handling debts. The biggest advantage of getting a personal loan for debt consolidation is convenience. Instead of paying off all your loans simultaneously, which can result to confusion and further plunge into debt because of missed payments, longer terms, and other factors that can definitely inflate your debt. With debt consolidation, you don’t have to worry about multiple debts anymore; just a single debt to finally settle once and for all.
  • Payment flexibility. When you’re already on a downward spiral of multiple debts, it’s hard to ask for better terms, especially that you already have a bad impression upon financial institutions. However, you may be able to strike a bargain for much friendlier terms with debt consolidation. With longer terms and friendlier payment structures, debt consolidation might be good for you.

When is debt consolidation not good for you?
While debt consolidation is a good financial tool to settle multiple debts, this doesn’t mean that you should apply for personal loan as soon as possible. There are times that debt consolidation may not be the best recourse for you. You may want to skip debt consolidation if the following circumstances are present:

  • Worse payment terms. When you do the math (which is a very tricky one) of all your debts and their interests and you see that debt consolidation will only make your debt much bigger. While a little difference may not hurt—especially if it will save you time and money dealing with your debt—a huge discrepancy between your current debts and the potential amount if you consolidate them via loan, then you might be better off paying them all at the same time if you can.
  • Bad money habits. Unfortunately, having multiple debts simply means that you suck at handling your finances. However, what if debt consolidation will, instead of allowing you to structure your debts for easier payments, it will just make the matters worse? For instance, you might fall for the false sense of security that all your debts have been settled, and may throw you back again in the arena of debts. If you know that you easily get sucker-punched by these methods, then maybe debt consolidation is not the best option for you.

The final question: should you apply for a personal loan to consolidate your debt?
Debt consolidation is a very powerful financial tool that can help people free themselves from the shackles of debt. However, you may want to do the following questions before you combine your debts into one single account.

  1. Do the math. Compare the amount of all your debts, including their interests, and the amount when you consolidate them. If you’re better off with consolidated debt when it comes to the amount, then go ahead and get one now.
  2. Check the payment terms. When you combine your debts into one single payable, convenience is a definitely a big thing when it comes to paying it off. If the payment terms can lighten your load, then you’re better off with debt consolidation.
  3. Change your money habits. Debt can be erased, no matter how long it takes for you to do so. However, horrible financial habits are there to stay for a lifetime. You’re mulling on getting debt consolidation; that alone should be a wake-up call to change your ways for the better.

Whether we like it or not, some of us aren’t really good when it comes to handling our finances, and options like debt consolidation exist to keep us afloat. However, keep in mind that the best cure to debt is still being wise when it comes to your finances.
