Meeting Mr. Ube

Though I have a talent in cooking, hubby is the certified foodie. In fact, my talent in cooking was brought about his being meticulous in the food he eats. I developed the expertise through his criticisms (ilang oras mo niluto? gaano kalakas ang apoy? paano mo ginisa?) oh yes, every meal, para akong ginigisa!

And so, when it comes to great food finds, I trust him.

One afternoon, he said we’re on for a lugaw hunt.. the best lugaw, Goto sa Garahe at Santonal, Pasig.. unfortunately, the store was closed and with hungry stomachs (times 6.. we brought the kids along) we’re in hunt for another lugawan. Closer to our place was the lugawan at Floodway, Pasig.. which was not child friendly. Good thing, opposite the lugawan is Lucky Gold Plaza which houses Robinson’s supermarket, fast food chains and other interesting finds. Near the parking area was a newly opened Chinese food establishments. Being a fan of Chinese cuisine, we opted to stay there while husband gets his lugaw fix.

Lucky to find Mr Ube @ Lucky Gold Plaza!

Since it was our first time, we ordered the usual, beef wanton noodles (110 PhP), siomai(50PhP) and spring rolls(90 PhP). Then the kids noticed a small section int he restaurant that offers Chinese delicacies such as hopia, tikoy bearing the name Eng Bee Tin. The boys asked for Piyaya + their newest offering, custard hopia + moon cake + boat tarts.

Sulit naman at talagang nasarapan kami dahil every week (minsan 2x a week) nagpupunta kame kay Mr. Ube!

Later I found out, Eng Bee Tin is a established and well known store for producing and selling world- class Oriental delicacies. And the owner Mr. Chua Chiu Hong got the name Mr. Ube for being the pioneer in making Ube Hopia.

Our lates trip at Mr. Ube, I ordered Pork Kikiam as recommended by Mauie.. I was tempted to try the radish cake but I am not to sure.. siguro pag kasama si mudrabels para pag di ko type sya kakain haha..

The pork kikiam (50 PhP) was tasty and the sauce was sweet.. just the way I like my food 🙂

Siomai as usuall! all time favorite of my kids. Mr. Ube also offer frozen goods, we actually bought 2 dozens of sioamai (90 PhP per dozen, an order of siomai is 50 PhP, 5 pcs.) few days prior to our visit this week:

Buti na lang may lutuan ako ng soimai.. bought it from Divisoria for 150 PhP (kasama na takip)

I tried their Lechon Macau (110 PhP).. serving is just right for the prize but the taste exceeds my/our expectation.

Spring Rolls as usual, my first born commented on how tasty and delicious the meat inside the spring roll was.

We also tried their two bites siopao (50 PhP).. sauce is the same as the sauce on the pork kikiam. The siopao bun was perfect! This is the type of siopao bun that my husband loves.

For a family of 6, we usually spend 500-700 at Mr. Ube (kasama na ang custard hopia which usually amounts to 200 PhP). Super sulit naman.. if I will compare it to other fast food restaurant that we frequent, the price is almost the same (we usually spend 400-500 at Jollibee and McDo).. the good thing about Mr. Ube is we’re all happy with the food (hindi lang ang mga chikiting no).

And one of the many reasons why we keep going back at Mr. Ube is this:

Custard Hopia! My boys loved the original custard hopia while I prefer Custard Ube Hopia (48 PhP, 4 pcs).

I can’t wait to try the other food offerings at Mr. Ube like Lomi, Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet (bawal na daw ako umorder nito eh, kase every Mann Hann trip is sweet and sour fish fillet trip..)and Mr. Ube specialty stir fry noodles.

Nakakagutom si Mr. Ube!

Parenting Tip on Helping Your Kid Cope With School Demands

My second born is now in Grade 1 and as I observed it, he’s having a hard time coping with the new schedule. He sleeps earlier and not as bubbly and playful as he was when he’s in pre-school. He’s no in school from 7 Am to 1:30 Pm, where as when he was in pre -school it’s only 3 hours of school. Another thing, in pre-school, they only tackle 2 subjects per day, now in grade school, they tackle all subjects everyday! Poor boy:(

I know some moms with a first grader can relate to my situation. So I have been thinking how I can make it easier for him and help him cope with the demands of longer school hours and more difficult subjects.

To start, feed your child well. Prepare a heavy breakfast so that they would have enough energy for the day. Also make sure that they have something to munch on during recess or break time. Make him feel more special by bringing his lunch. That’s how we do it here, as much as possible, I make it a point to bring his lunch to school so that he won’t feel being away from me that long.

Give your kid vitamins and other supplements. Being in school with other kids exposes him to different virus, specially that he’s now in school for a longer period of time. To make sure that he’s protected, I give him extra dose of his vitamins.

Do not force your kid to study more. For my grade 3, we spend an hour each day for studying (class then meryenda then tutor time with Mommy).. but for my Grade 1, I only give 30 minutes or less so that he’ll have more time to rest.

Let them watch TV or play for a while. As much as I don’t want them to watch TV or play a gadget, I realized it’s their way of relaxing. Now, I let watch TV for an hour a day (but still no gadget, that’s a Saturday treat!)

I guess in time, a few more weeks or so, my Grade 1 boy will be able to cope with the school demands and I want to make that few more weeks easier on him.

If you have a Grade 1 student, have you noticed the same?
