Before, Between, After

In their Language or Reading subject, one of their lesson is arranging words alphabetically. I asked them to arranged the phrase: document management software and they did it well. Knowing the alphabet makes it easy for them but they also need study what comes before or after.. they also need to know what is a letter in a between of certain letters..

They are not that familiar with before, after and between since English is not our main language.. so I have to explain each..

Before means bago

After means pagkatapos

How about between?

…….

Silence

……

Then my nephew answered..

STAR?

Sati’s First Movie

The first time we went to the cinema with the kids, we only brought  the older boys inside the cinema. We still had my two helpers back then so we left Sati and Chico with them in a playhouse inside the mall. This year, since I no longer have helpers, it’s either we bring them all inside or one of us will have to be with Sati.

When Kung Fu Panda 2 was shown, the boys together with my sister and mother watched it. I was left to take care of Sati and mend a friend’s broken heart (can you guess who? LOL). On our second movie date, our plan was to leave Sati under the care of my mother but for some reason, she was not available that day. We decided to bring Sati inside the cinema..

And her first movie experience.. was a success! As expected, she did not let go of my breast and sleep more than half of the movie. She spend some time eating popcorn and munching on a lollipop. I also made sure that cotton balls are on her ears to lessen the sound. The thing is, she didn’t threw a tantrum! yay!

History Teaching

Sibika is a subject in most elementary classes. This deals with the history of the country. It is like social studies and culture for kids. And that subject is being taught in Filipino.
I find it really hard to teach him subjects in Filipino language, there are words that is hard to express in Filipino and most words used in their subjects were pure Filipino.. words like mapagkumbaba.. kirot sa puso.. ehh? who’s using those words anyway? I mean in their ordinary day? Of course, I have to try harder and explain him what are the meaning of those. I actually can’t imagine people who is into translation industry, there are words that is really hard to translate into Filipino, take fat burners, how will you say that in Filipino without losing it’s meaning?
It’s hard to explain the concept, when in fact there’s no concept at all. Unlike in Math, you just need to know the theories and you can solve all the problems. In subject like Sibika, the best way to teach them and make them understand the subject is repitition.
