Mommy Mundo ExpoMom 2014: You The Mom!

Dearies! Let me invite you to Mommy Mundo’s ExpoMom 2014 on May 16-17 at Glorietta Activity Center.

Here’s a Press Release from Mommy Mundo and what you can expect from ExpoMom 2014:

Moms be Proud: Shout You The Mom!

By the time a child reaches his second birthday, his mother would have changed his diaper 7,300 times. By his 18th birthday, she would have prepared for him 19,710 meals–and spent more than 100,000 hours to his care, granted that she gets to sleep eight hours every day that is, which is doubtful. Motherhood truly is an all-encompassing vocation, which can sometimes overwhelm mothers themselves.

But what makes moms so good at what they do is that they absolutely love what they’re doing. Caring for baby while running her home, making sure healthy meals are prepared at home, and all the children’s needs are met. They do the groceries, take the kids to the dentist, and oh, and in most households, moms hold 9 to 5 jobs or run successful businesses too!

Mommy Mundo Founder Janice Villanueva says, “We admire moms for their almost superhuman qualities, their powers in time management and multitasking alongside their ability to do anything and everything for their loved ones, and they all do these things wholeheartedly and passionately at that! And because most moms do all these tasks with grace and usually with flair even, we may sometimes forget to show her some appreciation and affirmation.

Even moms themselves sometimes don’t seem to recognize their own efforts. That’s because taking on numerous responsibilities and caring for those we love come natural to us. Still, we should take pride in who we are and the important roles we play not only in our own families, but also in our communities and country.

This Expo Mom 2014, we shout out YOU THE MOM! – this is a campaign to  recognize the many big and small accomplishments of all moms. Through various planned activities online and at the Expo Mom event, we affirm and appreciate all the awesome things that moms do every single day, whether they’re taking care of their babies at home, doing volunteer work for a cause they believe in, or helping out a friend in need.

Now on its seventh year, Expo Mom is the biggest event of its kind, gathering progressive, active moms in an environment that’s both recreational and educational. Showcasing beloved mom brands alongside mom-created products, Expo Mom has drawn over 60,000 mom participants since 2008. It has become a venue for like-minded moms to establish lasting connections and has also become the catalyst for the mompreneur movement in Manila. This year’s Expo Mom will feature over 60 booths at the Glorietta 2 Activity Center, Palm Drive, Ayala Center. Expo Mom 2014 will also feature all-day talks, demos, and raffle draws.

Expo Mom’s You The Mom! campaign puts the spotlight on all the unbelievably good things that moms do by featuring 10 women whose stories represent every mom who has made a difference in her community, her family and in her child’s life. Real portraits of these moms, as photographed by Cres Rodriguez-Yulo, will be showcased via in an online gallery, hoping to spur on a complimenting social media campaign encouraging everybody to take the time to post a #youthemom statement. Statements from moms can be a post on what they are most proud of as a mom.  For non-moms, posts can be a shout out all the good things that your mom has done for you or recognize a mom friend who inspires you. By using the hashtag #youthemom and #expomommanila, posts will be tracked and 3 of its participants will get a chance to win sponsored shopping sprees at Expo Mom.

At Expo Mom, a “You The Mom!” signature wall will allow moms to write their statements on what they are most proud of as a mom. “You The Mom!” is a celebration of motherhood,” Janice says. “We want to give value to moms who make a difference in the lives of our families and influence the course of our country. If you know of such a mom, give her a hug today to show just how much you appreciate her. If you’re a mom yourself, go ahead and give yourself a pat on the back because you’re doing an awesome job! You The Mom!”

Entrance to Expo Mom 2014 will be a requested donation to MomShare’s literacy projects. One hundred percent of Expo Mom’s entrance fees will go to its partner beneficiary, Kinder Project, which aims to provide reading tools and training to public school teachers in Quezon City and Payatas.

Mommy Mundo Privilege Passport holders get in free and will bring home a You The Mom! Tote bag. To apply for a Passport, log on to www.mommymundo.com/passport.

Chico’s Birthday at TMC

Few days before his 6th birthday, he was admitted at TMC together with his Diko (Mico). It was a severe case of gastroenteritis and he was already prone to dehydration. Our pedia said to confine Mico too since his case is the same with Chico (although starting pa lang), sabi ni Pedia, isang alagaan na lang. At the ER, the diagnosis was not the same for both kids, ayaw nga kame payagan noong una na sa isang kwarto na lang.. turns out after a day, same nga sila ng case. The best talaga ang pedia namin dito. If you’re in Pasig, at naghahanap kayo ng pedia, try Dr Conde at De Castro.

We’re positive na makakauwi kame before his birthday, pero may lagnat pa din ang mga bagets, no choice but to celebrate his 6th birthday at the hospital.

O di ba, ang weekend getaway namin, nauwi sa TMC hahaha

Eh kilala nyo naman ako, hindi pwedeng basta cake lang kahit gaano ka simple ang birthday 🙂 dapat laging may touch ng DIY princess 🙂

So the day before his birthday, we went to Robinsons Galleria to shop for supplies and gifts for them. Tradisyon na yan na kahit sino ang may birthday, lahat sila may regalo. And because they recently watched Lego Movie, aba Lego ang gustong regalo at dapat daw tigdalawa sila!

Ay! jusme! mahalia jackson pala ang Lego!!!!!! Hindi keri ng budget to buy 8 sets, buti na lang I found a cheaper brand:

This is not a fake or copycat brand, Kre-O is a line of construction toys manufactured by Oxford and marketed by Hasbro. It fits perfectly with Lego and Mega Bloks. The little girl went for Hello Kitty Mega Bloks.

On the day of his birthday, Chico woke up to this:

Corrugated paper  and double sided tape rocks!!! And the brown paper is a recycle from a brown paper bag 🙂 sumakit lang panga ko kaka ihip sa mga lobo na yan.

He seems very happy with the set up and happy with his cake too! That’s his favorite cake eh, Ube Macapuno from Max’s Corner Bakery.

Aside from our gifts, may gift din sya from TMC:

Now comes the most challenging part.. ang bauuin ang mga blocks nila!!!!

I guess he’ll remember this birthday the most.. it’s not very usual to spend your birthday at the hospital 🙂

Mukhang naman nag enjoy siya di ba? What do you think?

A Definitive Guide On Caring For Elderly Parents

Being a good care provider for your parents is more complex than you may think. Many people believe it’s about attending to a parent’s needs, but it’s actually more about considering the options, making the right decisions, and, ultimately, doing what’s best for everyone involved.

Encourage Independence

If you have a parent who is able to continue living at home, and wishes to remain there, or even if your parent has moved in with you and yet is still active and healthy enough to undertake some day-to-day tasks by themselves, then by all means encourage independence as much as is reasonably possible. While medical conditions and general issues relating to advancing age can contribute to a lower quality of life, one of the primary factors in degradation of the elderly is simply giving up.

It may start with you doing the weekly shopping for your parents, or cooking them dinners – nice gestures, of course, but potentially bad for their physical and mental health. When the elderly are capable of doing things for themselves, they should. Instead of doing everything for a parent, perhaps find ways that help them live more independently. Consider going shopping together, for example, or installing mobility aids around the home which make it easier for them to get from the bedroom or living room into the kitchen to rustle up some lunch. Even the smallest change can make a massive difference to how your parents carry out their everyday life.

Consider Different Care Approaches

It’s important to remember that the term ‘caring’ doesn’t necessarily mean that you become the sole provider for your parents. What the term does mean, however, is that you provide care in a way which benefits them. This may mean visiting a few times per week, it may mean moving a parent into your home, or it may even mean arranging for professional assistance or care home residency. If you have a parent who requires a level of care that you are unable to provide, then arranging for alternative forms of care isn’t abandonment or selfishness, it’s simply providing care in a different way to what we normally associate with the term. There are many different care approaches out there to suit different families and to meet the varying requirements of individuals. Caring for someone is doing what’s best for them.

Take a Break

To be a good carer for your parents, you need to stay happy and healthy yourself, and this means taking regular breaks, having some ‘me’ time, and recharging your batteries. Caring may not be particularly strenuous work physically, but it can be exhausting emotionally – not only might you find yourself busy all day long, but seeing a parent require help when you’re used to parents being the strong ones and looking after you can be quite upsetting and difficult to deal with.

There are three main ways that you can arrange for alternative care arrangements on a temporary basis. The first is an informal method which involves another family member taking over your duties. This method is ideal for carers who provide minimal assistance, and who have close family members nearby. However, if you provide a more significant level of care, or do not have anybody you could ask to help out, you can arrange for a community care assessment, or a carer’s assessment, through your local council or social services. Respite care may either take the form of home carers visiting the premises or a temporary stay in a residential home, depending upon the level of care required and the options available through your local council.

Speak Up When Your Role Changes

Believe it or not, it’s OK to change your mind with regards to how you care for a parent. For example, you may have agreed to provide care to a parent who suffered with minor mobility problems or mild forgetfulness. However, if a parent has subsequently deteriorated, or been diagnosed with a degenerative condition, your role as a carer may change beyond what you had anticipated. As a child, we think it’s our job to care for our parents in old age, and it’s certainly our job if we want it, but it’s important to place boundaries, both for our sake and our parent’s sake. If a parent suddenly requires help with intimate care, for example, we have to not only consider if this is something we feel we can do, but also if it’s something our parents would feel comfortable with. Rather than outsourcing all care, you could arrange for a professional carer to carry out anything you’re uncomfortable with, and continue to look after your parent in other ways.

Know What You’re Entitled To

Providing care for a parent is something that benefits the country greatly, and helps leave spaces in residential and nursing homes for those who require a more significant level of care, or who do not have friends or family members to help out, so the government is committed to rewarding carers for their efforts. It’s also recognised that providing care can impact a person’s ability to work, and that income may be affected by home care. Carers may be entitled to financial assistance in the form of carer’s credit (for those providing at least 20 hours of care per week) or carer’s allowance (for those providing 35 hours or more per week).

Carer’s credit takes the form of ‘free’ national insurance contributions, which can help you draw additional state pension during retirement. Carer’s allowance, on the other hand, is in the form of monthly payments. You don’t need to live with your parents to be eligible, and full time carers will receive £61.35 per week (as of 2014). To apply for financial help, ask for the DS700 form from the Department of Work and Pensions.
