#PlayItRight: 5 Ways to Know if a Site is Distributing Content Illegally

One of the most popular sources of entertainment in the Philippines is streaming videos online. However, many people think that everything available online is legal. Piracy is a huge problem and something that cannot be solved easily. Moreover, it exposes viewers to dangers like viruses, malware, identity theft, and affects the livelihood of those producing and starring in films and TV shows. Even more dangerous, illegal sites also carry child pornography content.

Globe has launched #PlayItRight, an advocacy to educate Filipinos to download or stream content from legitimate sources only, and to share the dangers of streaming or downloading from illegal websites.

Here are five ways to know if a site is streaming or distributing illegally:

1. It has a lot of dubious-looking ads

One of the hallmarks of an illegal streaming website is the number of ads that appear as pop ups. Oftentimes, viewers will have to go through several of the popups before they can even watch the promised content. This is dangerous because they may contain malware that can steal private information like passwords, bank account numbers, and credit card numbers.

2. The content has low quality

Content quality is usually low, with choppy or poor resolution, inaudible audio, or mixed-up subtitles. Some are even recordings at a cinema! Because these streaming websites obtained the movies illegally, their copies are inferior. Another sign that a film was stolen: the copy has a visible watermark that says it’s not for distribution.

3. You need to buffer a lot, even if your internet speed is fast

A fast and reliable internet connection doesn’t mean the viewer can watch from illegal streaming sites smoothly. These websites are not meant for content delivery so viewers will experience lag and buffering, especially if many viewers access the site at the same time. Legitimate streaming sites work with telcos to make sure that viewers get the best experience when watching content.

4. There’s no contact information

Websites normally have a “Contact Us” page where users can reach the administrators should they encounter a problem. A site with no such page is suspicious because it means they have something to hide. Illegal sources don’t want to get caught illegally streaming and distributing copyrighted content so they don’t put their contact information to avoid legal repercussions.

5. Movies currently showing in cinemas are already available online

The telltale sign of a site distributing illegal content is that movies still being screened in cinemas are already available in the site. Film studios rarely grant immediate distribution to films that are still in theaters, so sites peddling these are questionable and most likely acquired illegally.

Protect yourself from the dangers of illegal streaming and support the film and TV industry, make sure to #PlayItRight. Globe offers affordable access to legitimate content through international partners like Netflix, Disney, HOOQ, FOX+, and Viu.

Seeing Through Essilor

I have been wearing eyeglasses since I was 8. I have a hate/love relationship with my eye problem. Sometimes I am OK with it but most of the times I do not like it. Who likes a problem anyway? My always concern is swimming, ang hirap mga bes, specially with my eye grade (which is super duper laboooo). I end up swimming with my eyeglasses, wala naman nagsabi na bawal di ba?

But my most favorite part of wearing eyeglasses is buying a new one (minus the bill part hehe). It’s a relief knowing that my eye condition is not worsening. And I got to choose a stylish frame, lalo na if I am buying at Quiapo. Eyeglasses frames there are super duper cheap. The lens are too! But it is only last year that I got to learn about the different lenses.

Dati, dalawa lang ang alam ko, Multicoated and ordinary lense. I usually get the multicoated because it is thinner. Ganyan lang palagi when I go to optical shops. Lagi lang tanong nila, “Ma’am multicoated or ordinary lens.” I wish they told me more about the different lenses provided by Essilor.

Buti na lang medyo attentive ako sa mga events invite. From there, I have learned about Essilor, got curious and now all our family’s using their lenses. NO GOING BACK TO ORDINARY LENSES.

So ayun na nga, ang dami palang lenses ng Essilor. They have lenses specific to the age of users. Different lenses din for protections. You can actually learn more about Essilor brands of lenses at their website. Our favorite kind of lens is the one that has protection from blue light. That’s the light emitted by your gadgets. It’s dangerous because our eyes are not effective in blocking blue eyes.

Ask your optha about blue light protection pag magpapagawa kayo ng eyeglasses. Three of my boys are wearing eyeglasses and all their lenses are with blue light protection from Essilor.

Piolo Pascual Eye Can Succeed Event

I have been wearing eyeglasses since grade 3. Paulit ulit ko naman sinasabi yan ano? Pero that’s something worth sharing di ba? I have been wearing eyeglasses for 27 years na. Piolo Pascual Eye Can Succeed Event

My kids started wearing eyeglasses as early as 6 or 7 years old (sorry na, #momnesia), mas bata pa sa akin. Poor eyesight runs in the family! It’s sad but we don’t dwell on that, we focus on the solution and not on the problem. And thank goodness we have the means to buy my kids eyeglasses. I just can’t imagine my life without eyeglasses or how difficult my kids life would be without one. Ang hirap magbasa sa blackboard no. Specially with us na ang surname ay P! Pag nag arrange alphabetically, kawawa ang mga anak kong malalabo ang mata.

But not all people or kids have the means to buy an eyeglasses, let alone afford an eye check up. In fact, at least ten in every 100 Filipino students are suffering from poor eyesight. Quite alarming ano? This concern has led Essilor Vision Foundation (EVF) to team up with leading actor and brand ambassador Piolo Pascual to launch Eye Can Succeed. The program is geared at providingfree eye check-ups and free prescription eyeglasses to help 10,000 senior high school students pursue higher education and achieve success.

And I am very proud to be a part of the first ever Eye Can Succeed Advocacy Event with Piolo Pascual. Here’s a video of what happened during the event and a short message from Piolo Pascual to the students.

Piolo Pascual Eye Can Succeed Event in Rizal High School Pasig

EVF kicked off the advocacy campaign at Rizal High School, which has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest secondary school in the world, by having licensed eye health professionals discuss the importance of healthy vision, proper eye care, and optometry as a career option for Grades 11 and 12 students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) academic strand.

With the assistance of volunteer optometrists, EVF examined the school’s 4,000-strong Grades 11 and 12 students and distributed free prescription glasses to students who are in need.

The Essilor Vision Foundation is committed to eliminating poor vision and its lifelong consequences, and to providing underprivileged people the opportunity to live a better life through better sight. P.S. dahil we’re both wearing Eassilor eyeglasses, gusto ko lang i share ang aking first ever selfie with Piolo Pascual. Piolo Pascual Eye Can Succeed Event
