The end of My Lose More, Live More Journey

ahh let me rephrase that.. today marks the end of my lose more, live more journey with the bloggers 🙂 PRESSCON  namin today!!

>>>inserts scream<<<

Obviously, this will be my first time to be on the spotlight.. I like covering events, but today it would be different! arggghh

Of course it’s not totally the end of the journey with them, our support group has just started and we’re all more eager to lose more and live more now than during the start of the program. For more than a month, we’ve been through a lot:

First, we had our initial check up, where in our sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides level were tested. We also did treadmill test and our vital stats were recorded too. You can read how HIGH my cholesterol and triglycerides on this blog post and what are the things I did to lower my cholesterol.

We were educated with the importance of fiber in our body and what else we can do to lose more (moving more and exercising).. and its not just about weight anymore..

We also expereinced what it’s like to do a near death exercise..OK I was just kidding, we experienced CROSSFIT!

Crossfit is elite fitness for everyone at – from couch potatoes to seasoned athletes. It is a program that was originally developed by legendary coach Greg Glassman after his many years of watching, working with, and coaching all types of people.

Based on our experince, the routines were really easy, but oh noes! it was intense.. and we were not able to walk straight a few days after! You can read our CrossFit experience here as well as some weight loss tips from a very well known Nutritionist (Nadine Tengco).

After more than a month, we had our final check up..and I am happy that my triglycerides are now lower, same goes with my cholesterol. I also lost weight in the process.. that’s two birds in one stone no? I owe that to C-lium, to our support group and to the people who were with us during this journey.

So excuse me my dear readers.. I still have to practice walking with heels 🙂

Wish me luck (with the heels) hahaha

Getting To Know Dermatitis: Cause, Symptoms and Treatment

My third soon often complains of itchiness behind his knees.. I thought it was just ants, then we noticed that his skin on that area becomes flaky and reddish. His pedia said he is suffering from Dermatitis. She said it was infantile eczema or Atopic Dermatitis to be exact. It was my first time to heard such as thing, so as any mommy would do, I asked the big G for more information: what is atopic dermatitis? what causes atopic dermatitis, what are the symptoms of atopic dermatitis, how to treat atopic dermatitis and how to prevent atopic dermatitis. What is Atopic Dermatitis?  Well, according to our pedia, it is a skin inflammation. She said it was not nakakahawa or contagious. It can be very itchy and the child suffering from it experience discomfort. It can lead to infection though as when the child scratch with dirty hands. What cause Atopic Dermatitis? Pedia said it varies, it maybe food allergies, the sudden change in temperature, clothes material, dry skin or even due to auto immune reaction. Our pedia advised us to be very observant with my third son.. take note of the food he eats and see if this is the cause of his AD (atopic Dermatitis) What are the symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis?  Itchy and flaky skin. Blisters due to scratching. How To Treat and How To Prevent Atopic Dermatitis?  As the cause of AD varies, to prevent it, is to know the cause. If your kid is suffering from AD and the culprit is the food, pinpoint which and stop giving them that kind of food  to prevent AD. Treating Atopic Dermatitis also includes pin pointing the cause so as to prevent it from getting worse. My pedia recommended the following:

  • Foskina B tow times daily
  • Use hypo allergenic soap such as Cetaphil Wash
  • Use  lotion twice daily
  • Take a bath daily

Lucky me, I was given some Cetaphil products, I can give this a try and see if it can help cure my son’s AD. Here something about Cetaphil:

From the makers of Dermatologist and Pediatrician recommended brand of cleansers and moisturizers is Cetaphil Restoraderm. Cetaphil Restoraderm is formulated for very dry itchy skin. Cetaphil Restoraderm may help reduce the signs and symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis, improve quality of life, and prevent flare-ups and prolong remission. Cetaphil Restoraderm has two variants: moisturizer and wash. The Cetaphil Restoraderm Moisturizer contains filaggrin breakdown products and ceramide precursor, which help restore the skin’s natural moisturizing factors and rebuild a healthy skin barrier. The Cetaphil Restoraderm Wash has a patented foaming technology called “Miracare” that contains high levels of nourishing oils to hydrate atopic skin. Cetaphil Restoraderm Wash is non-soap, lipid-free and has a neutral pH. Cetaphil Restoraderm Moisturizer and Wash are both clinically proven effective and safe for use among babies, early as 3 months, and toddlers.

We learned that his AD was caused by eating chicken, mango, watermelon and egg! poor boy.. those are his favorites!

Plastik Ka Ba? Weeeh Di Nga?!?

I had the chance to watch Cheche Lazaro presents Plastic Ka.

made me realize I should continue posting about my “manong wag mo na i-plastic” adventure to inspire more people to stop using plastic.

Opps. did I say stop using plastic? I take that back.. watching Plastik Ka, I have to agree on some points.. yes we cannot live without plastics.. and I am sharing with you some of the things that I can’t do without plastics:

  • frenemies… eek I was just joking hahaha
  • Milk Tea and float straw.. I don’t use straw on my drinks.. but with Milk Tea and Coke Float, is it really possible? I mean to enjoy the drink without the straw? Isn’t one of the most exciting part of drinking milk tea is the sinkers and how it goes through the straw.. ang saya di ba?
  • Plastic wrapper for books and notebooks.. self explainable.. paki explain sa katabi mo kung di gets.
  • Plastic on supermarket meats.. which I learned from Cheche Lazaro show, I can actually use my containers instead!

I did not include other plastic usage such as hanger, containers etc.. those are plastic made stuff that I really can’t live without..yes we cannot live naman without plastics.. but I think we can minimize the use of it. How?

Here are five ways to minimize the use of plastic without much hassle to your lifestyle:

  • if it is not milk tea or coke float, do not use straw.
  • when buying small medicine, don’t ask for plastic and if they put it in a small plastic, say you’ll just place it inside your bag.. those small plastic bags, it has no use, you can’t even reuse it.
  • avoid the “pakidoble” culture… that is common no? padoble ng plastic at baka mabutas.. as much as one plastic would do, let it be that way.
  • your garbage bin can live without plastic, so don’t make it a habit to line your garbage bag with a plastic. The thing is, because you are doing it, you will have the tendency to commit the “padoble” culture just to have more plastic that you can use to line your garbage bag.. gets?
  • when buying at convenience stores.. specially if you’re just buying a mineral water or a pack of something, that an do without using a plastic bag..

It’s not easy..as I have mentioned before, inconvenience is the price I have to pay to help save Mother Earth. It’s very inconvenient to bring your own ecobag, to bring your own container when shopping for meat and wet goods.. it’s not easy but inconvenience is a very small price.

I do agree, on the point that, plastic banning is not the ultimate solution, it was pointed out that other trash such as wood, old clothes have the tendency to sink at the bottom of the river.. and that only plastics are seen as the waste that clogs the river… making the metro more susceptible to flooding.. it’s all about waste management still and education. It was amazing what Villar Foundation has done to clean up their river and how they manage waste in their area..I hope this kind of waste management can be done in all parts of the metro (if only LGU will unite.. OK that’s another thing..)

Of course, waste management aside, minimal plastic use will be a great help…

How about paper bag? as one of the guest in Cheche Lazaro presents said, “basura pa din yon”….indeed..
