What my kids are like, and how to raise your child/children in this day and age.

Making History Subject More Fun

I heard my first born talking to his friend about school.. you know the usual stuff, how to take a nap during recess, favorite subjects as well as least favorite subject. As expected, his favorite subject is Math (that’s the hubby’s genes talking!) and his least favorite (more like the subject he hates the most) is History (Hekasi or Sibika). It was so cute hearing him and his friends talk about Lapu- Lapu, Magellan as if it is the most unusual topic on Earth. I cannot blame them as I find History a boring subject.. specially the terms used! Oh noes.. nose bleed! Mas malalim pa sa balong malalim ang mga Filipino words!

And so.. we will soon launch Project History! First mission this coming school year>> make History subject as much fun as  I could!

Now, I am excited.. how can you make a boring subject spring up to life? Games? Artworks? Re-enactment? What else?

I guess, I will start with the Globe and maps. Come to think of it, we can make a good game of finding a country.. we can make  contest out of that! How about a game of listing countries that starts with a certain letter? The most number of countries listed wins! ayayay! So many ideas!

But how about the dates? Whoa!! That’s another reason why I never liked History.. to many dates (and names) to memorize. Well, if the kids love reading comic books, well I guess, we;ll give History comic book a try. If I won’t be able to find one, I’ll just make one! Weeeeh Calling all the gods and goddess of creativity.. HELP!

Obviously, more that the kids, I am the one that needs to study about History.

How about you my dear readers? Have anything to share on how to make History subject more fun?

How To Know If A Child Is Cleared from Primary Complex

Primary Complex is a form of Tuberculosis in children. If the kids are exposed to an adult with a Tuberculosis, they might be infected too. Primary Complex is not contagious among children. A child diagnosed with PC can still play and socialize with other kids.

primary complex clear

Primary Complex Symptoms includes weight loss, recurring coughs and sleepless nights. If you have seen some Signs that your kid is suffering from Primary Complex, better ask your pediatrician to evaluate your child.

The 3 Important Things You Need To Know About Primary Complex is that it is not contagious, it is a TB form in children and that it requires 6 months of taking Medicine for Primary Complex.

hrz-pedia-kit

HRZ Pedia Kit was prescribe to us during the treatment.

One box of HRZ Pedia Kit contains:

  • One bottle of Isoniazid + Pyridoxine HCl (Comprilex®) 200 mg/12 mg per 5 mL Syrup (Pediatric Dose)
  • One bottle of Rifampicin (Rimaped®) 200 mg/5 mL Suspension
  • One bottle of Pyrazinamide (Zinaplex®) 500 mg/5 mL Suspension

Trust me, it is cheaper to buy the kit than buy separate bottles. And because of Unilab’s TasteRiteTM Technology, the med tastes better. Trust me, we tried other PC med brand and the taste was awful!

During the course of treatment, you need to return to the pedia for check ups and evaluation. After the 6 months treatment, the pedia will evaluate if your child is cleared from Primary Complex.

According to our Pedia, an Xray or Skin Test after the 6 months treatment will still show that your child is positive from TB. The only way to know if your child is cleared from Primary Complex is clinical or direct observation of the patient. The pedia said that it will take two years before the lungs is cleared from the scar. You should observe your child if he is gaining weight and sleeps peacefully at night. Your pedia will be the one to diagnose if the child needs to be treated for another few months or if he is cleared from Primary Complex.

Aqiva Food Talk: Fight The Diet Shift

In the recent event “Food Talk” Aqiva helped us moms know more about “Diet Shift” and offer us empowering solutions to conquer this phase. Present during the event was  celebrity mom and TV host Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski who shared with us her own experience with Diet Shift,  “I have three boys, and my youngest, Renzo, is four years old. I noticed that Renzo is starting to prefer unhealthy food staples such as French fries and ice cream. I know people expect me to know how to teach Renzo to eat healthy because I’ve already experienced this with my other two boys. But the truth is, it’s not easy. It’s always a different challenge with each kid when it comes to mealtimes.”

Dr. Bernadette Benitez, a Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Specialist who currently serves as the Medical Director of Wyeth Nutrition Philippines, and a consultant the Asian Hospital, Medical Center in Alabang, and Makati Medical Center shared with us that Diet SDhift is real and told the usual age when it occurs.

“It is normal for a child to go through a Diet Shift, as experimenting with new food, and developing tastes for new food, are all part of growing up. The problem is when the child gets exposed to more types of unhealthy food, and would start to prefer these over other food that are ideal for his age. This usually heightens at age 4, when he starts tasting sugary snacks from classmates, and begins craving for fried and crunchy food from the malls, etc. This is when parents should start monitoring their child’s intake of unhealthy food, and continue teaching them to eat healthy.” explained Dr. Benitez.

I can very well relate to what Dr Benitez said. My two older boy experienced this phase and my 3rd son just got out of this phase. My two older boys conquered diet shift easily but with my third son, it took a while and a lot of convincing. He now eats better and loves his veggies and fruits.

Ms. Luz Callanta, Nutrition Expert and Lecturer, discussed what are the nutrients that was commonly “lost” during this shift and the importance of this nutrients:

“Proper nutrition is needed, especially during the child’s growth and development years. This is when he needs most of the vitamins and nutrients, at the right levels. Unfortunately, this is the same time that the threat of the Diet Shift strikes, and gaps in nutrition may occur. It is essential at this stage to supplement at-risk nutrients in the child’s diet and nutrition,” says Ms. Callanta.

The event was not just about diet shift and nutrients, Celebrity Chef Jackie Laudico of Bistro Filipino taught us a few ideas on how to prepare food.. FUN ideas! great food presentation. “The best way to make children try healthy dishes is to make them interested in it. The food’s visual appeal helps in getting their attention, and eventually they would be willing to taste the healthy snack.” shared Chef Laudico.

Of course, when giving child friendly meals to your kid, always partner it with Aqiva. It is formulated with A.Q.I (Adequate, Quality and Important) Nutrients, AQIVA is packed with 40 ingredients including 25 essential nutrients, scientifically designed to support the child’s nutrition as parents teach them healthy eating habits, especially during the Diet Shift phase.

“Aqiva proudly takes on the advocacy of raising healthy children through healthy eating habits and proper nutrition. We want to help moms instill the importance and value of healthy eating in their children, and at the same time, we want children to enjoy their healthy meals–to actually like what they eat,” said AQIVA Senior Product Manager Carlo de la Paz.
