New Dish: Spring Time Beef Stew

F is for FOOD! and if I can keep up with it, every Friday I will be posting about food, mostly food from our kitchen, not much on restaurant review because you know we don’t eat out a lot (I cook good food that’s why).

For this week, let me share with you my newest dish: SPRING TIME BEEF STEW

Once upon a time, I had the courage to go through my things and discovered some recipe books I bought years ago… that was the time when I don’t even know how to fry a hotdog.. One of the recipe books was about Western dishes as Turkey, Pies and Stew. The Spring Time Beef Stew got me. We love beef stew, it’s a dish I can cook with my eyes closed. It’s a dish where a kilo or 2 of rice is not enough for my boys. Some of my friends can attest to that.

Stew is slow cooking, so just imagine how much time it takes to cook it. I cook my beef stew with onion (lots of it), soy sauce, bell pepper and potato, that’s all. Spring time beef stew calls for green vegetables and is tomato based. The recipe on the book was not appetizing to me so I created my own recipe based on my beef stew and here it is:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3/4 kg beef brisket, cubes
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 medium potato, cubes
  • 10 stalks Baguio beans, slice into 1 inch long
  • green and red bell pepper (one each), sliced
  • 1 medium sized carrots, cubes
  • 1 small pouch tomato sauce (about 2 -2 tablespoon)
  • 8 medium onions, sliced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • salt and pepper
  • 5 cups of water

Start by seasoning the beef with salt and pepper. Take a container or a plastic ware with cover, put the beef cubes and the floor and shake it until all the cubes are coated with flour.

Fry the beef until golden brown.

In a casserole, put the beef, onion and the soy sauce, simmer for about 2-3 minutes then add the tomato paste. Cook in low fire for about 10 minutes (adding water from time to time). Add all the water and adjust the heat to high and let it boil. Turn the heat to a very low setting as it boils and leave it for about an hour(sometimes 1 hour and 30 minutes, sometimes more than that) or until the beef is tender.

When the beef is tender, put the bell pepper, potato and carrots, wait until the vegetable are done before adding the Baguio beans. Let it simmer for about 2-3 minutes and turn off the stove.

The sauce will thicken due to the flour in the beef. It is the onions that will give this dish its distinct taste.

Give this dish a try and let me know 🙂

Holy Week Schedule 2012

Holy Week is one of the most anticipated week here in the country. For Catholics, it means a week of renewing faith and celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. To some, it means long vacation and a time to relax and be with their family.

Today marks the start of Lent Season, Ash Wednesday (February 22, 2012). Jesus spent 40 days fasting before his public ministry begins and during this time he endured temptations. Ash Wednesday signifies the start of the 40 day fasting and praying.

April 1, 2012 is Palm Sunday. It is a celebration that depicts the entrance of Jesus Christ at Jerusalem. When I was a kid, I always look forward to this day as a day before Palm Sunday we would be busy making our Palaspas (made from young coconut leaves).

TRIVIA: do you know where the ash used during Ash Wednesday came from? from last year’s palaspas! How do I know that? because the parish at my Lola’s province used to ask for our old Palaspas a few days before Ash Wednesday 🙂

April 2, 2012 is Holy Monday and April 3 is Holy Tuesday.

April 4, 2012 is Holy Wednesday

April 5, 2012 is Maundy Thrusday

April 6, 2012 is Good Friday

April 7, 2012 is Black Saturday and April 8, 2012 is Easter Sunday

I always look forward to Holy Week, not just because of the long Holiday but I just love this season. Brings back a lot of memories and make me still for a little while. In terms of photography, it is my dream to publish a photo book (and also get challenge coin, design inspired by one of the icon during the Holy Week procession) about Pinoy’s celebration of Holy Week.

Artworks With Faber-Castell Watercolour Pencils

Faber-Castell Watercolour Pencils is a art tool that is very close to my heart. It was in 2003 when my husband bought a set for me. It was expensive but more than that, the thought the he supports my hobby was overwhelming. And now that I am having another love affair with arts and crafts, this watercolour pencil is a must have.

Faber-Castell Watercolour Pencil is a color pencil that you can use to color your art works and turn it into a watercolor painting! It’s cool right? You start with a pencil color but you end up with a water color artworks. It can be bought in 12, 16 and 24 pencils set. The one I bought is the 24 Watecolour pencil sets which 300+ PhP at National Bookstore.

Earlier today, we had an art session and I let the boys experience the magic of Faber-Castell. I outlined a scene of their choice. Mico wants a man fishing while Mahat opted for a man looking out on his farm. I used Faber-Castell Colouring Pens (yes I love most FC products) and here’s the result of our Artsy Saturday:

Oh! I forgot to take a shot of the their art works when it was in pencil color phase….this was after they colored it with watercolour pencil then finished it using a wet brush.

Our next art session will include drawing using pencil and some techniques on shading, to make their drawing look real 🙂 Oh I hope my boys will turn better than me on the art department 🙂
